WELCOME to my ePortfolio!
I am currently attending SLCC and below are a few of the projects I have worked on for various classes.
LE 1220 - Career Development2019 - Reflection of reading 'How full is your bucket'
Reflection
on reading ‘How full is your bucket?’:
I
loved reading this book which talked about how we communicate with one another
both in a professional and a personal environment. It benefitted me by giving me a playbook
about my own positive bucket I need to keep filled but also how I can consistency
fill others buckets as well. I have also
brought the book to my workplace, will do a training and hope to implement these
techniques into the team dynamic.
Overall, I would like to present it to our PeopleOps team to build culture
and engagement for the company.
The
area that surprised me the most in reading this book was how important our
communication is with each other in affecting mood and general positivity. I knew I always had to be concise with my
communication, positive and upbeat but I didn’t realize that even some of my
habits of teasing others or joking in a negative way can really take away from
someone’s bucket and what they have left to contribute to others.
This
book reiterated what I already thought about communication in general, however
provided a deeper roadmap of how to navigate those interactions. It also allowed me to gain some perspective
and prompts to ask myself if I am filling someone’s bucket or taking away from
it. It forced me to be tremendously
mindful of my interactions in general with others.
After
reading this book, I was able to get some confirmation of positive interactions
and how important they are. I learned
that this is something I am very passionate about – building strong connections
with others. Also, I got excited about
being able to share this book with friends, colleagues and family members.
I
have already been able to apply this philosophy to my work and home life, which
has been very satisfying. It has allowed
me to build strong relationships and allowed me to be more empathetic to others. I will keep my copy of this book on hand and
will continue to recommend it people interested in building strong
relationships with others.
Psychology 2250 - Personality Theory
2018 - Reflection and assignments completed in course
I absolutely loved this class. It was fascinating and enjoyable to learn about all of the most known psychology theories and the professionals behind them. The thing I loved the most about this class is being able to take the theories and teachings and apply them to my current personality and how I interact with others. Being a corporate recruiter, it also provided me some great content to utilize at work and how I interview candidates. It can used to better understand my own biases in addition to my hiring managers and how we can recognize how to avoid the pitfalls of snap decisions and to follow an easy conversational flow with a candidate. It helps me understand what motivates a person other than just needing a job. What are their passions, hurdles, driving forces and will they thrive at their job? How does their personality fit within the team and add to the culture of the company overall and can we as a company offer them the opportunity they really crave?
As far as any dislikes, I would say I was only frustrated with the lack of female professionals in the field of Psychology in years past. As we learned about the history of psychology and how men primarily led research and experiments, women would typically take a backseat. This has nothing to do with the class at all, but I am glad times are changing and there are more women in the profession and leading important studies and breakthroughs.
My favorite topics and activities by far are the personality tests. I love being able to see how my personality stacks up to others and how I can better approach or handle difficult situations the more honest I am with myself. I loved digging into the big 5 personality traits or the OCEAN model, which discusses openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion and neuroticism. I tend to score high on extraversion and openness to experience which explains the way I interact at work and at home. I tend to be very open and honest and sometimes a little too quick to offer advice or my opinion but genuinely care about others.
The greatest things I learned in this class, with a better understanding of the theories of psychology, I can apply some of the approaches to my everyday life. For example, Bandura’s social learning theory, which states new behaviors can be acquired by observing and imitating others, would be highly beneficial in behavior modification with my 5 year old. He often struggles with following rules and listening and although we do use operant and classical conditioning, I need to be more consistent and allow him more observational learning from myself and other children.
My favorite theorist would probably be Maslow and his theory of the Hierarchy of Needs. I think this theory makes the most sense to me as an adult trying to cover my basic needs and ascending needs in order to climb the ladder to self-actualization. He talks about how as individuals, we look to a purpose in life and that we are always trying to better ourselves as we mature. This is something I practice in my life daily by trying to move to the next levels of connection and belonging and ultimately, self actualization of my being.
Communications 1080 - Conflict and Diversity
2018 - Reflection and final paper
Like my Communications class last year, has also been extremely helpful not only in my recruiting career but also my personal life. I stop to think about situations before I react. I try and get into the other person's shoes and see things from their viewpoint, I look at the steps of solving a conflict and how it can resolved in a win/win resolution. In addition to expanding my knowledge on conflict and diversity, I was able to dive into understanding more about myself and being a woman and the expectations that come along with that. Below is a final paper I have attached that talks about my personal struggles with maternal instincts and how standpoint theory explains some of the expectations in race, gender and culture.
Communications 1010 - 2017 - Reflection and group project
This class has been extremely helpful not only in my recruiting career but also my personal life. Even though I have been working in a field that requires me to communicate daily with candidates, managers and colleagues, this class has added a richness to how and when I approach various situations. Below is a group project I worked on with three other people which describes a classic debate. What should you do in a roommate situation when trying to clean the house or apartment you share with others? This project helped me to better communicate with others in a virtual arena, in addition to collaborating with different personalities and opinions.
Psychology 1100- 2016 Reflection Writing
Reflection:I chose three assignments I worked on for summer semester
2013, which show what I have learned in English 2010. The three assignments I chose were a memoir,
a position argument and a group Public Service Announcement. In my memoir, I talk about my early childhood
and how it shaped me into a lean, mean recruiting machine. In my Position Argument, I talk about my
personal experiences with the minimum wage.
And in the PSA, as a group, we talk about the cost of college and how it
affects a person’s long term salary.
I believe my performance towards the English 2010
course goals were positive and forward moving.
I feel I have progressed in my abilities to understand my audience and adapt
to various types of genres. I was able to
demonstrate my ability to conceive, draft and revise my writings by showing my
research techniques and notes I kept during the semester. In addition, because of editing my papers
several times, I have taken the advice from the teacher regarding phrasing and
story flow. I feel this has helped me
tremendously with my writing.
My process in writing each of these papers started
out with a brainstorming session on paper.
I would write out several topics I was interested in and how it related
to my current career. I wanted to write
about something I was passionate about, which is recruiting. After deciding on a topic, I would research heavily
online to support my paper. I would then
gather all of the information and write freely on my laptop. After that, I would then make sure I included
an introduction, personal story and works cited to support my topic. Lastly, I would always finish with a positive
ending, pictures and videos to enhance the visual aspect of my paper.
The biggest challenges I faced with writing each of
these papers were making sure the story and the target audience understood what
I was trying to convey. I addressed
these challenges by editing the papers several times from different viewpoints
in addition to having others proof read my papers and tell me what they
understood them to be.
I picked these three assignments because I believe they
demonstrate my background and how I became confident in my current career. I was able to use my knowledge to write about
topics I deal with on a daily basis.
These assignments helped me expand on my knowledge and to better
understand my audience. My writing
abilities improved and I was able to write interesting papers, which came from
several re-writes and editing. I
appreciated this course tremendously, as I was able to learn how to segment my
papers in order to deliver readable and enjoyable information.
